Series 1 Personal - Biographical

Printed material, photographs, correspondence. This series includes personal material relating to PCM's work as a journalist and radio broadcaster, a large number of letters and telegrams of condolence received by Lucy Morrison after PCM's death, tributes published after PCM's death, biographical notes including a draft biography and related correspondence, personal papers and memorabilia, invitations, list of archives, and material believed to be related to PCM's MSc thesis in Marine Zoology.

Series 5 Photographs

Aborigines, Queensland, Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia, Melbourne Botanic Gardens, Northern Territory, abroad, Victoria. Many photographs taken in national parks, especially in Victoria. Also included are some photographs of Aborigines taken on the Mackay expedition to Central Australia, and some notable photographs of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens.

Series 9 Newspaper Cuttings

Loose newspaper cuttings, scrapbooks. This series offers a fine representation of PCM's printed journalism, including his early general reporting for The Argus, and his many popular science columns written for The Argus, The Herald, The Sun, The Australasian, and Your Garden. Series also includes some of PCM's book reviews for The Australasian (9-7), and some partly biographical articles about his career and his activities.

Series 10 Great Barrier Reef Committee Expedition 1925

Correspondence, photographs, diary-notebook, reprints, maps, newspaper cuttings. This series includes some of the earliest material in the collection related to PCM's professional life. Correspondence in this series is the earliest in the collection. Included also are reports of the Great Barrier Reef Committee, mentioning PCM's work

Series 11 Mackay Expedition 1930

Photographs, typescript accounts of the expedition, correspondence. This series documents one of the most important expeditions of PCM's career. The purpose of the Mackay expedition to Central Australia was to carry out survey work, investigate the flora and fauna, and observe the Aborigines of a part of Australia at that time relatively unknown and mysterious. The series includes many significant photographs of Aborigines of the Pinto and Eumo tribes, and PCM's detailed accounts of their life and culture.

Series 12 Japan 1947

Diary, notebook, correspondence, publications, photographs. This series documents PCM's lecture tour to Australian occupational forces in Japan. There are some detailed and entertaining letters from PCM to his family describing his experiences, including his impressions of Hiroshima.

Series 13 Grimwade Expedition August - September 1947

Newspaper cuttings, diary, verse, correspondence, account of expedition, photographs. PCM joined this scientific expedition to Western Australia as naturalist.

Series 14 Royal Australian Ornithological Union Expeditions

Reprints, photographs, correspondence, notebook. Series includes photographs from 1952 expedition to Central Australia, and a report on 1948 expedition to Western Australia.

Series 15 National Parks

Publications, maps, photographs, correspondence. This series is strong in its material on Wilsons Promontory National Park, including some good photographs. Also included are some letters of congratulation on PCM's appointment as Director of the National Parks Authority.

Series 16 New Zealand

Radio broadcast scripts, correspondence, newspaper cuttings, publication. Material in this series covers PCM's visits to New Zealand, and his long held interest in the fauna and flora of that country. Also included are some sets of radio scripts PCM recorded for the New Zealand Broadcasting Service, some of which were used by Lucy Morrison in compiling The Junior Naturalist.

Series 17 Other Subject Files and Ephemera

Reprints, maps, correspondence, verse, radio broadcast scripts, photographs, pressed flowers, newspaper clippings. This series includes material on a wide variety of subjects, including: Ronald Campbell Gunn; the Sir Colin Mackenzie Sanctuary at Healsville; radio scripts dating from PCM's time as Director of the Broadcast Division of the Department of Information; Aborigines; Jeannie Gunn and her book We of the Never-Never; Willie Wagtails; PCM's nomination to the Heritage 200 program; Ferdinand von Mueller; PCM's biography; the Crosbie Morrison Memorial Lectures. Also includes a typewriter and a film projector.

Series 19 Sound Recordings held by National Film and Sound Archive

This is a series of material held by the National Film and Sound Archive. It consists of 16 inch acetate transcription discs containing some of Philip Crosbie Morrison's radio broadcasts, including "Wild Life", "Junior Naturalists' Club", "Crosbie Morrison Session" and a recording titled "Among The Stone Age Men".

Series 20 Movie Films held by the National Film and Sound Archive

This series consists of films held by the National Film and Sound Archive. Notes for films held by the National Film and Sound Archive were written by archivists at the Australian Science Archives Project, University of Melbourne with the assistance of Lucy Crosbie Morrison and may differ from the descriptions prepared by staff at the National Film and Sound Archive. National Film and Sound Archive identification numbers are given where they are known.

The films are mainly 16mm in format, and are of locations in Australia and Japan, including: Great Ocean Road; Melbourne Zoo; Grampians; Northern Territory; Grimwade Expedition to Western Australia; trip to Hattah Lakes; Tasmania; Mt. Keira; camping with the Royal Australiasian Ornithologists Union. There is also footage of animals including whales, worms, kangaroos, wallabies and other mammals, insects and reptiles; Compilation films; Very Short Pieces and Family Films; and a commercial film. All films were photographed by Philip Crosbie Morrison unless otherwise indicated.

Series 21 Subject Files

Contains labelled subject folders from the filing cabinet of Philip Crosbie Morrison. These folders are not in any apparent order or category groupings. Each folder contains primarily newspaper and magazine clippings, journals and small publications with some loose notes and correspondence. Subjects include botanical, flora, fauna, the environment, animals and some places.

Many of the hand labelled folders are empty but have been retained in their original position.

Series 22 Audio-Visual Material

A small assorted set of film material and magnetic tape. Includes four mastering audio tapes with two Wildlife programmes on each; and two mastering audio tapes with two Junior Naturalists programmes on each.

Most of Philip Crosbie Morrison's film and sound recordings are held by the National Film and Sound Archive. For lists of this material see Series 19 and Series 20 in this guide.
