This was the first defeat of Japanese ground forces in the war in the Pacific. 17 Sep: 78th air raid on Port Moresby by 26 bombers escorted by six Zeros.20 Sep: Japanese reach Imita Ridge in southern foothills of Owen Stanley Range only 50km in direct line from Port Moresby. 21 Sep: 82nd air raid on Port Moresby by 27 bombers. Subsequent air raids on Port Moresby were made mostly at night by a single bomber or three at most. 1 Oct: W. J. Gibbs promoted Flight Lieutenant, RAAF. 2 Nov: After heavy allied air attacks on their supply lines Japanese had been forced back across Owen Stanley Range and driven from Kokoda. 1943Jan: Japanese troops dislodged from Buna-Gona sector of New Guinea.2 Mar: W. J. Gibbs posted HQ RAAF Command Brisbane (an administrative posting) but remained with Meteorological Section, Allied Air Headquarters, Brisbane. 15 Mar: Japanese move troops in barges along north coast of New Britain with aim of reinforcing Lae and Salamaua. Allied air forces destroy Japanese flotilla in Battle of Bismarck Sea. 12 Apr: 109th Japanese air raid on Port Moresby. Jun: MacArthur establishes forward headquarters in Administrator's residence, Port Moresby. 4 Sep: After saturation Allied Air Force raids on Japanese air bases in New Guinea and Rabaul 9th Division AIF makes amphibious landing near Lae. 5 Sep: US paratroops land in Markham Valley near Nadzab. MacArthur and Kenney watch the exercise from a B-17 (Flying Fortress). 194427 Feb: MacArthur boards light cruiser USS Phoenix and participates in amphibious landing at Los Negros, Admiralty Islands.22 Apr: MacArthur on cruiser USS Nashville for landing at Hollandia. Goes ashore and has elaborate headquarters built.
