Message from the President
The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering was founded in 1975 to play a major role in policy relating to technology, and to recognise through its Fellowship distinguished personal achievements by Australian engineers and technologists. It is natural that the Fellowship of the Academy would wish to mark the occasion of Australia's Bicentenary by a significant and relevant contribution. This record of technological achievement, made possible by the voluntary participation of Fellows of the Academy and others, has resulted in this very fine account commencing with the arrival of the first European settlers 200 years ago. It is hoped that this comprehensive book will remain a valuable reference for future generations. In so doing, it will continue to honour a very great Australian mining engineer and business leader, Sir Lindesay Clark. (Sir David Zeidler) President
