SiliconTwo new silicon producers will be in operation in 1988 in Tasmania and WA to meet the growing market for alloy grade and chemical grade silicon. The Tasmanian operation near Hobart will be in a converted plant which formerly produced calcium carbide. The WA plant will be on the site of a wartime operation at Wundowie which was set up to produce potash salts and charcoal iron from alumite deposits.
