Series 4006 contains working papers from Diane Elizabeth Barwick's research into the clan boundaries and language groups among the Kulin and Kurnai people of Victoria, and also from her writings on this subject intended for publication.

Diane Barwick's article on the Kulin nation was entitled 'Mapping the Past: An Atlas of Victorian Clans 1835-1904' Part I, published in Aboriginal History 8(2):100-131.

Diane Barwick intended to publish subsequent papers from this research but no further publications eventuated in her lifetime. Series 4006 contains research notes and draft narratives in relation to both the published article and also the related material that remained unpublished at the time of Diane Barwick's death.

Typed lists of names of Victorian Aboriginal tribes and clans, and of Victorian towns, rivers, mountains and reserves. Lower case font and capital letters are used to distinguish between tribes and clans. Possibly used in Diane Barwick's PhD thesis, or in her article entitled 'Mapping the Past: An Atlas of Victorian Clans 1835-1904', Part I, published in Aboriginal History 1984 8(2).

Contains thirteen typed A4 pages, including some duplicates, one plastic and one cardboard page, and six small typed name labels showing one name per label. Approximately 30-50 names per sheet. Housed in a used envelope addressed to Diane Elizabeth Barwick from Sally Weaver and postdated 1982.

Howitt] papers', a Clan Identification list, and various photocopied maps and other documents. Second bundle contains annotated extracts from various publications by Howitt and possibly other authors also.

Diane Barwick looks to have intended to publish this research in a subsequent article to 'Mapping the Past: An Atlas of Victorian Clans 1835-1904', Part 1, Aboriginal History 1984 8(2), which is listed in inventory item BARI00062 (Series 3).

This item contains assorted historical notes compiled by Diane Elizabeth Barwick about early contact between Aboriginal and White Australians in Victoria, and a draft copy of 'Nanny's Story: Reconstructing the Impact of Early Pastoralism in the Murray Valley' by Marian Aveling (later known as Marian Quartly) and Diane Barwick which looks to have been supplied to Aveling by Richard Barwick. This collection of notes look to have been supplied to Dr Marie Fels on 23 September 1996 by Richard Barwick.

Also contains photocopied data list arranged by dialect and compiled by Jennifer Laycock, and two maps, regarding Aboriginal languages in Victoria. Dixon 1980 is cited. Originally enclosed in a plastic sleeve.

Contains notes regarding the location, chiefs and languages of the Ngarigo and Woi-Banurong people in Victoria. Second set of notes consists of numbered extracts drawn from 'GAR' [probably George Augustus Robinson, Chief Protector of Aborigines in Port Phillip, 1839-50] reports and journals.

Notes are grouped roughly in two sets, neither is labelled. Part of a set of papers tied with string, which look to have been grouped together by Richard Barwick after Diane Elizabeth Barwick's death. Enclosed in a cardboard box-file entitled 'Some Files Relating to Victorian Tribes - Some Yorta Yorta', in Richard Barwick's hand. A4 sheets, and smaller fragments.

Contains assorted notes and extracts regarding the locations, languages, tribes' and individuals' names, etc, of various Victorian Aboriginal clans and moities, including Wauerong, Darngorong, Ngurai, Wiradjuri, etc. Sources include the papers of George Augustus Robinson, Chief Protector of Aborigines in Port Phillip 1839-50, and R. M. W. Dixon's Language Files.

Notes are grouped in two sets, neither is labelled. Part of a set of papers tied with string, which look to have been grouped together by Richard Barwick after Diane Elizabeth Barwick's death. Enclosed in a cardboard box-file entitled 'Some Files Relating to Victorian Tribes - Some Yorta Yorta', in Richard Barwick's hand. A4 sheets, and smaller fragments.

Also contains Diane Elizabeth Barwick's referee's report on 'Intensification: a late Pleistocene-Holocene archaeological sequence from southwestern Victoria' by H. Lourandos. Report is for J. Peter White, editor of Archaeology in Oceania. Report is dated October 1982.

Also contains Diane Barwick's draft review of A Nation of Strangers: G. A. Robinson and the 'Manemeet'.
