Department of Metallurgical Research, The Baillieu Laboratory (1945 - )

The Department of Metallurgical Research was financed by the Broken Hill North Mine, Broken Hill South Ltd and the Electrolytic Zinc Co., and established as a post-graduate department in the School of Metallurgy for the purpose of research on the properties of metals and alloys. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research created a joint facility for Physical Metallurgy. A gift of 30,000 pounds from the Baillieu family enabled the expansion of the department into the Baillieu Laboratory of Metallurgical Research.
