Thomas joined the University of Melbourne in 1968 as lecturer in Geophysics. He was Head of the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne in 1998. Prior to that he had been the Deputy Head of Earth Sciences 1995 - 1997, and Acting Head from 1 October 1997.
