Northern TerritoryThe Northern Territory has four separate supply systems, associated with the major towns of Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. In 1978, when the Territory achieved self-government, an Act created the Northern Territory Electricity Commission (NTEC) which took over responsibility for all generation and distribution. Some independent generating stations are operated by mining ventures, particularly at Gove (bauxite) and Ranger (uranium). The Darwin area was supplied since 1962 from the oil-fired steam station at Stokes Hill, in the port locality. The high cost of imported oil meant that electricity consumers had to be subsidised by the government, and this factor, coupled with rising operational costs and increasing loads (at the rate of 3.5 per cent p.a.), encouraged NTEC to seek another power station site. Notification has been given that the government subsidy would cease in 1988/9. The Darwin area was supplied since 1962 from the oil-fired steam station at Stokes Hill, in the port locality. Katherine's diesel power station was replaced in 1987 by a gas turbine station using natural gas from the adjacent pipeline to Darwin and Tennant Creek is being similarly converted. In 1985 a separate 150 km gas pipeline was laid from Palm Valley to Alice Springs, where the old diesel power station was converted to natural gas and a new gas turbine set is to be commissioned in 1987.
