NMC and Secondments
In 1987 Geoff moved to Melbourne to take up the appointment of Superintendent of the National Meteorological Centre. He saw the need to improve his managerial skills and between 198689 completed a MBA as an external student at Deakin University. In 1991 he participated in the Public Service Commission's Executive Management Scheme.
Years of study and experience gained from senior managerial postings paid dividends with important secondments to the Industry Commission to work on the Inquiry into the Costs and Benefits of Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions (1991) and then the role as secretary to the Commission of Inquiry into the proposed East Coast Armaments Complex (1994).
He was Chairman of the WMO Commission for Basic Systems' Working Group on Data Management from 198896, and was elected vice-president in 1996.
During the second half of 1996 Geoff assisted Professor Slatyer with his study of the scope to enhance revenue generation in the Bureau.
