Meetings of the IMO Technical Commissions in Toronto (continued)

The CAeM was another Commission which had a large attendance. The group photograph contains over 60 people, with the front row having Nagle (President), Little and Berry from the US, Warren (Australia), Viaut (France), Banerji (India), Starbuck (Hong Kong) and two whom I cannot identify. Among the others were Barnett (New Zealand), Cartwright (US) and an assortment of people from Europe, Asia and Africa. Some of those representing Asia and Africa were from countries in Europe which had territories in these regions. The large number participating indicated the widespread interest in the provision of meteorological services for aviation and the feeling of urgency in obtaining international agreement, jointly with the now International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), on the method of providing such services.

With a delegation of two from Australia and with Warren's commitments in participating in business of RA V our participation in meetings of the other Commissions was limited. But we were able to obtain copies of agendas and summaries of proceedings to take home.

It is strange that the group photographs do not include the Canadians, Drs Patterson and Thompson. Patterson was on the eve of retirement as Director of the Canadian Meteorological Service and Thompson was due to succeed him in that position. Patterson was an expert in instruments and possibly was the President of CIMO which would account for his absence from the group photographs of CAeM. Both Patterson and Thompson were delightful people and we were to see much of Thompson at a later stage.

One of the hospitable acts of the Canadian Government was to provide a trip across Lake Ontario to the Niagara River in a steamship. We disembarked at the wharf in the Niagara River to climb to a lookout to view the majestic sight of the Niagara Falls.
