Appendix 5: Summary by H. N. Warren of the Operation of the Meteorological Section of Allied Air Headquarters, Brisbane, 1942–45

The following is the text of a four-page document, prepared by H. N. Warren in December 1945, summarising the history of the Meteorological Section of Allied Air Headquarters. A fuller account of the establishment and operation of the section is described in Metarch Papers No 7 by W. J. Gibbs. I believe that Warren prepared the document intending that it be published in the Tropical Weather Research Bulletin (TWRB) or the Weather Development and Research Bulletin (WDRB) but did not realise his intention because of pressure of business at that time.

I hold what appears to be a carbon copy of the original document which is dated 5 December 1945. At that stage the meteorological section had been transferred to RAAF Command Headquarters in Brisbane. The document has HNW/MML in the top right-hand corner of page 1. This was the usual manner of identifying the originator and the stenographer in documents produced in the RAAF Directorate of Meteorological Services. Tom Hall has suggested that MML would identify Margaret Leverett as the stenographer, as she was Warren's secretary at that time. HNW clearly identifies H N Warren as the originator of the document.
