Some Thoughts on Tropical Meteorology (continued)The thesis indicated that at that time we were well aware of the importance of upper divergence and convergence in producing changes in the intensity of high and low pressures systems at mean sea-level. Also that we were aware of the effect of upper winds in 'steering' the movement of surface cyclones and anticyclones. The bibliography in the thesis gave an indication of the limited range of literature available at that time. The list includes Brunt, Douglas, Chree, Deppermann, Dunn, Grimes, Haurwitz, Humpreys and Jeffreys as the primary references. These, with Petterssen, were my primary sources and gave much food for thought. I did much reading of these texts and other papers at that time. Unfortunately there was no-one with whom I could discuss these ideas and obtain advice on how to examine theoretical aspects of the subjects which interested me. There were some interesting questions to be answered but I needed guidance on the best means of seeking solutions.
