1 Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited (PMA Ltd)
Date Range: 1 January 1970 - 1991

Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited (PMA Ltd) was formed as a joint venture between Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited (ICIANZ) and BASF Australia Limited in 1970. The company took over production from ICIANZ at the Pigments Plant at Laverton on 1 January 1970.

The company produced pigments for the Australian market throughout the 1970s and 1980s. However, economic pressures and other considerations lead to the cessation of production in December 1990, followed by the demolition of the Laverton plant and the closure of PMA Ltd in 1991.

2 General Manager - PMA Ltd

The General Manager was the senior management position at Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited, overseeing all departments and reporting to the PMA Ltd board.

3 Personnel - PMA Ltd

The Personnel department of Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited, incorporating a Personnel Superintendent (later Personnel Manager), and a small number of additional staff responsible for safety, training and general duties.

4 Production - PMA Ltd
Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited
Date Range: 1 January 1970 - c. 1981

The Production department was the area of Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited responsible for the actual manufacturing of pigments and pigment products. Sections within the department included those responsible for the Azo and Phthalo plants. Production had the largest number of staff in PMA Ltd, primarily consisting of shift workers employed on the factory floor.

5 Operations - PMA Ltd

The Operations department followed the Production department at Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited, responsible for running the factory floor and the manufacturing of pigment products.

6 Development - PMA Ltd
Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Limited
Date Range: 1 January 1970 - 1991

The Development department consisted of Development Officers, analysts, chemists, and laboratory and technical staff. Responsibilities included the development, testing and improvement of pigments and pigment manufacturing processes.

7 Pigments Plant at Laverton
Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited (ICIANZ)
Date Range: 1960 - 31 December 1969

Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited (also known as ICIANZ) established the pigments plant at Laverton in 1960 to meet the growing demands of the Australian market. Production commenced in 1962, continuing under ICIANZ until 1970, when they entered a joint venture with BASF Australia Ltd to form Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Ltd which operated the Laverton plant until its closure in 1991.

The Development section of the Pigments Plant at Laverton, consisting of development officers, colourists, and laboratory staff. Responsible for the development, testing and improvement of pigments and pigment products.

12 Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited (ICIANZ)
Date Range: 1929 - 1971

Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Limited (also known as ICIANZ) was formed in 1929. In 1960, they established the pigments plant at Laverton, with production commencing in 1962 and continuing throughout the 1960s.

ICIANZ then entered a joint venture with BASF Australia Ltd to form Pigment Manufacturers of Australia Ltd [PMA] which took over operation of the Laverton plant. ICIANZ became ICI Australia Pty Ltd in 1971.
