Series 3 Sir James Pitman - Lecture Notes and Slides

Notes and slides from lecture by Sir James Pitman, April 1963. One folder of lecture notes - revision of notes; three boxes of colour transparencies (slides); two boxes of slides.

Series 4 Class Aids

Workbooks, cards, sheets for young students and related teachers' manuals, guides and notes, and the i.t.a. typewriter. Number workbooks, Downing Readers, soundbooks, workbooks, display kits, flashcards, lettercards, Pitman Story Books, i.t.a. Teachers' Manuals; and the i.t.a. typewriter.

The titles have been transcribed as closely as possible to the original text, however as this was not done on an ita typewriter, many of the ita book titles will appear 'mispelt' according to the practices of the initial teaching alphabet. This being the case, it is always best to consult the records themselves for the correct typeography and spelling of the words. This applies also to the writers' names, which have been transcribed herein as starting with with capital letters, even though this is not usually the case on the actual publication. It is also worth noting here that according to Arlie Hargreaves, that on official documents, the ita Association (Australia) preferred to transcribe names using traditional orthography.

Series 5 Teacher Training

Guides, books, notes, records used for educating teachers with regard to i.t.a. newsletters, books, journals, manuals, notes, cards, booklets, published reports, cassettes, readers, course notes, wordlists, Parents' Kit, Speech Readers, i.t.a. programme books, Augmented Roman Alphabet, Teachers' Packs, information regarding i.t.a. publications. All used for the education of teachers in i.t.a. methods and philosophy - for young readers, remedial and adult non-readers.

Series 7 Correspondence

Correspondence files relating to Sir James Pitman, i.t.a. programmes, Dynamic English programmes and i.t.a. enquiries. Twelve i.t.a. enquiries; one NSW correspondence; eleven correspondences regarding i.t.a. programmes, mostly between users, Sir James Pitman and Arlie Hargreaves; one Dynamic English; and seven regarding Sir James Pitman/miscellaneous.

Series 10 Education in Aboriginal Communities, Teaching of the Bible, and Sudan Interior Mission (SIMLIT)

Reports, correspondence and related records pertaining to the literacy levels and education of Australian Aborigines, and Ethiopians. Particlularly, six files on the PALITA project which was a Programme for the Aboriginal Community using i.t.a.; records to government departments; correspondence concerning literacy of aboriginal communities; applications for a grant for the PALITA Programme; PALITA Lessons 1 to 11 - including teachers' notes; one file on the 'ita teaching of the bible', inlcuding samples of student work; one file on SIMLIT - Sudan Interior Mission, and the teaching of Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia, especially in the areas of religious education. Also, correspondence between the Sudan Interior Mission (Ethiopia) and Mr J. G. Stevenson in Australia, excerpts from reports of teaching adult literacy programmes in Ethiopia, and, SIMLIT handbooks (one in English and one in Amharic).
