Born: 16 November 1935 Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Opat was Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Melbourne 1973 - 2000 and has published widely in the fields of nuclear physics and particle physics. He was first appointed to the staff of the Department of Physics in 1964.
