Massey, a graduate of the University of Melbourne, was the Goldsmid Professor of Mathematics, University College London 1938-50, the Quain Professor and Head of the Physics Department from 1950-72 and head of the department of physics and astronomy from 1972-75. |

Independent lecturer in mathematical physics, Queens University, Belfast 1933-38, Goldsmid professor of mathematics, University of London 1938-50, Quain professor, head of department of physics 1950-72, head, department of physics and astronomy 1972-75. Vice-Provost, University College London 1969-73. Chairman, Council of Science Policy 1965-. President, Atomic Scientists Association 1953-57, president, Physical Society 1954-56. Hughes Medal, Royal Society 1955, Royal Medal, Royal Society 1958, Rutherford Memorial Lecture, Royal Society 1967, Gold Medal, Royal Astronomical Society 1982.
