Born: 1836?.  Died: 22 October 1885.

In 1882 John Drummond Kirkland was appointed the first Professor of Chemistry. He had been appointed Lecturer in Chemistry in the Medical School in 1865 while still an undergraduate in succession to Dr John Macadam who had died suddenly.


Career Highlights

Kirkland was a graduate of the University of Melbourne and was appointed Professor of Chemistry by only one vote from four other candidates. He took a cut in salary to become a professor since he had been paid £200 a year plus £900 in lecture fees. There is a memorial tablet to Kirkland in the Medical School erected by his students.
