Born: 1823  Dublin, Ireland.  Died: 13 May 1899.

McCoy was the Foundation Professor of Natural Sciences, University of Melbourne in 1854. A geologist by specialist training and research, and a palaeontologist, McCoy lectured in geology, zoology, chemistry, mineralogy, geography and botany, but with the passage of the years and the increasing complexity of the natural sciences he tended to concentrate on geology. Appointed for life, with no compulsory retiring age, he died in office while correcting examination papers in his seventy-third year.
