Professor Ladiges studied at The University of Melbourne obtaining a MSc and then a PhD. Currently head of the School of Botany, her scientific research has focused upon evolutionary biology including phylogenetic systematics, molecules, morphology, and biogeography. This research involves study of living plants centred on the Australian flora, especially eucalypts, and incorporates both morphological and molecular data. Characteristics of plants are used to reconstruct evolutionary relationships of taxa and to understand the biogeographic history of areas of endemism in Australia.

Professor Ladiges is actively involved in organisations beyond the university being a member of the CSIRO Biodiversity Sector Advisory Committee and a member and Deputy Chariman of the Board of the Royal Botanic Gardens of Victoria. In addition, she is a director on the Board of Yarra Valley Water and a member of the Advisory Committee of Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS).
