Born: 27 March 1930  Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Lovering was Professor of Geology 1969 - 1987 and Head of the School of Geology and then Earth Sciences 1975 - 1987, University of Melbourne; Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Melbourne, 1984; and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) 1985 - 1987. In 1987 he became Professor Emeritus at University of Melbourne and was awarded DSc honoris causa in 1999.
