James Charles FoleyNo. 127 February 1967, Item 1238Just before going to press, we were saddened to learn of the death of James Charles Foley on Monday, 23rd January. Mr. Foley was Chief Scientific Officer from the end of the war until his retirement in 1957. He gave 46 years of outstanding service to the Bureau, as a Divisional Met in Hobart until 1938 and, until his appointment as Chief Scientific Officer, since redesignated as ADR, he was chief of the climatological section. "J. C." was a climatologist first and foremost and made many very valuable contributions in this field. The Weather Records and Statistics Section, as we now know it, has been built on the foundation he laid nearly 30 years ago. Perhaps the greatest monuments to Mr. Foley's ability as a meticulous researcher are the Bulletins Nos. 32, 35, 38 and 43 on Frost, Hourly Temperature and Humidity in Capital Cities, Bushfires and Droughts. He sifted through incredible amounts of data and put long and painstaking work into the compilation of these voluminous bulletins, which are now standard reference works. The Director and officers of the Bureau extend to his sons and daughter their sincere sympathy in this very sad bereavement.
