No. 324 April 2000 (continued) Doug became Officer in Charge of the Australian Numerical Meteorology Research Centre (previously CMRC), when Brian Tucker moved to head the CSIRO Division of Atmospheric Research at Aspendale. He found time to continue his research on dynamic initialisation techniques and on the application of new data systems established for the Global Atmospheric Research project. Doug's opening words to his contribution to the ANMRC valedictory report were typical of his diplomacy and under-statement. In what was a difficult period for senior Bureau and CSIRO staff, Doug said: "Despite the uncertainty and disruption associated with both frequent reviews and the continuing administrative conflict over the centre's role and functions, the latter years of the centre's existence were paradoxically the most productive." Doug became the first Deputy Director (Research and Systems) in 1983 and joined the Director, Dr John Zillman and Bob Crowder as a member of the Bureau Executive. From that time on, Doug has been a major source of advice and wisdom to the Director and a key figure in the development of new directions for the Bureau. Doug's strategic and political skills can be seen, for example, in the shaping of the capital re-equipment program and the Australian Integrated Forecast System. Finally, I would like to recall a conversation I had with Doug shortly after I retired. I was and remain concerned that the Frosterley Club, for long-serving and retired Bureau staff, should survive and prosper I asked Doug if he could see a role for Frosterley He replied that he did, provided it retained links to the present Bureau and helped inform retired staff about new systems and new developments. Happy farming Doug, and welcome to the old buffers group.
