No. 286 May 1988 (continued) Doug, who also passed on apologies from DIR John Zillman who was absent interstate, said that Tony had displayed a 'close affinity and feeling for the customer', demonstrated particularly by his handling of special projects such as the ESSO Bass Strait program. He had a 'passion' for applied meteorology, particularly agromet, and had an 'international reputation for his excellence in that area and allied subjects'. He said Tony's achievements over the years 'gave testimony to his professionalism' and his retirement could be viewed as the 'end of an era'. Jock Dow, OIC Melbourne Airport, recalled some of the old days in the VRO and said that Tony was dedicated to ensuring the customer always got 'the best possible service'. In a special tribute, the Chairman of the CFA Victoria, Ray Greenwood, presented Tony with a plaque and spoke of the improvements which had come about as a result of the quality of information and standard of cooperation received from VRO. He said he appreciated the availability of VRO staff to give 'first hand information' to the CFA and commanded Tony for his 'easy manner and friendliness'. He thanked Tony for his service and cooperation. In response, Tony said he had made some wonderful friendships during his career, which spanned five Bureau Directors. He would take with him many fond memories and he was extremely pleased to see some familiar 'old faces' present, including Bill Gibbs, Don Hancock and Frank Callus. Tony and wife Lorna have been planning 'our retirement' for a few years. They intend to travel Australia 'as the urge dictates' and hope to visit the new Parliament House, cross the Nullarbor Plain and 'take the car across Bass strait on a ferry'. 'MC' of the occasion, Supervising Meteorologist Bob Wright also passed on his best wishes and read congratulatory telegrams from RD and staff of TAS, SA, QLD and WA R0s, retired RD SA Lyn Mitchell and East Sale Met Office staff. Tony and Lorna also share a joint interest in lawn bowls and plan to spend enjoyable hours in the fresh air enjoying this activity. To help promote his interests in the gardening 'field', Tony was presented with an electronic water control system. Very best wishes for a long and happy retirement from all your Bureau friends.
