No. 98 September 1964, Item 728 (continued)

In 1948 he was transferred to Melbourne as superintending meteorologist in charge of climatology and statistics, and five years later was appointed Deputy Director of the Brisbane Bureau. He returned to Sydney as bureau chief in 1959.

Up to the time of gaining professional status in 1935, Mr. Newman took an active interest in the Commonwealth Clerical Association and later as a P.O.A. member, served on branch committees and deputy appeals representative. He also became a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society in 1958.

Mr. Newman recalled that in 1921 he passed a departmental examination for E Class Professional Meteorologist with Messrs. Treloar, Foley, Hogan, Newman and O'Dowd, in that order. Messrs. Treloar and Foley obtained appointments and Mr. O'Dowd (Perth) got a 4th class clerk's position in Perth office. Messrs. Hogan and Newman however, had to wait several years for their fruits of victory as, contrary to the present day when the Bureau is scraping the University barrel for recruits, Hogan and Newman were placed thus:
Applications 2; jobs nil; Prospects nil.

Mr. Newman also indicated the following interesting lineage moves:
Timcke from Adelaide to 2i/c Sydney, 1920;
Camm from Adelaide to 2i/c Sydney, 1929 vice Timcke to Melbourne;
Newman from Adelaide to 2i/c Sydney, 1935 vice Camm to Melbourne;
Mizon from Adelaide to 2i/c Sydney, 1963 new position.

Mr. Newman has three children: John, in charge of western N.S.W. Soil Conservation Service at Condoblin (sending in pluviometer B. 14's punctually); Phil, wife of Dr. Spencer of Sydney; and baby Cathy, now a nurse at Camperdown Children's Hospital. He will live in retirement with his wife at their Roseville home.
