Macquarie Island (continued)

In Melbourne hurried arrangements were made to obtain a replacement for the sick man and Harold Power at such short notice and presumably with some persuasion from his seniors, accepted the position. The choice of Power was a logical one in the circumstances, as he was already suitably trained, having been assisting Griffith Taylor in his early investigation of the upper atmosphere.

Power had barely time to bid his mother a hurried farewell before catching the overnight boat to Launceston. On the next day he travelled by train to Hobart where he joined the Aurora. The ship then sailed almost immediately for the Antartic in accordance with the expedition's plans, calling 'en-route' at Macquarie Island on 15 November 1913.

Mawson's expedition completed its work at the end of the 1913–14 summer. In February 1914 the Aurora with all its members of the Antarctic parties onboard, left Antarctica and sailed to Adelaide where the expedition was disbanded.

Power and his companions were left at Macquarie Island to complete their year's tour of duty. When the time for their relief approached, there was, on this occasion, no expedition vessel available and another ship was sought.

The Commonwealth Government had embarked on research into fishing Australian ocean waters and for this purpose had acquired the Federal Steam Trawler Endeavour under the command of Captain Dannevig, a Scandinavian who had had experience with trawlers in the North Sea. This ship was engaged for the Macquarie Island relief.
