In March 2001, Professor John McKenzie, Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne, convened a committee of scientists and historians to steer a history project to mark the centenary of the Faculty of Science in 2003. The initial composition of the committee was:

  • Professor Rod Home
  • Dr Ed Muirhead
  • Professor Ian Rae
  • Dr John Ryan
  • Gavan McCarthy, and
  • Professor John McKenzie
  • Robyn Trethowen (Administration of the Committee)

One of the key products of this history project was the production of a web-based historical compendium of the Faculty of Science that would not only register all the key organisational units and people but map the relationships between these entities and link them to the appropriate historical published literature (both online and in print) and existing archival resources.

This particular project - the Faculty of Science at Melbourne Historical Compendium - was delegated to the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre at the University of Melbourne under the direction of Gavan McCarthy.

The core project team comprised Rachel Tropea, archivist, and Carolyn Rasmussen, historian, whose major tasks were to research, write and edit the content that was being added into a database developed using Austehc's Online Heritage Resource Manager (OHRM).

Rachel and Carolyn were further supported by other Austehc staff in various more technical aspects of the project, in particular, Helen Morgan, Joanne Evans, Alan van den Bosch, Robin Stephens and Rosanne Walker.

Although far more was achieved in this project than was originally anticipated, it is recognised that the task is ongoing. Any person who has knowledge of the Faculty, its staff and students, which they believe are worthy of mention in the compendium are encouraged to contact the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre.
